How it began

My running journey began in August 2014, I always was a sporty person playing football and cricket, but in the summer of 2014, while playing cricket, I had issues with my hamstrings. So I knew it was time to hang up my cricket boots but for what, I still wanted to keep fit.I recalled my uncle doing a lot of marathons and half marathons. so had a quick Facebook search for a running group near me and progressed from there.

As you can see from the pic above this was my first-ever event, a 5k colour run was fun and made the local press.

I now see myself as an intermediate runner, reading and learning as much as I can. My events range from 5k to half marathons, with the thought of doing a full marathon in 2018.

Five in Five

Running Challenge 5 Halves in 5 weeks

Just after Xmas, a great man and an inspiration to my running had cancer and I felt I wanted to help in some form, the way I could help was through my running and raise a little for the people who look after him.

Macmillan is a great charity and does some amazing work for people with cancer as well as the families that deal with this horrible disease.

My plan was to do 5 half marathons in 5 weeks, I knew March was a great time to hit this as there are some amazing half marathons in this month, my best time was 1.41.47, so the idea in my head was to do all 5 with a time of 2 hour, I felt this was achievable.

Eastbourne Half Marathon

On the 5th March 2017 my journey started, never done this before, was not a bad event, the weather was awful, with one killer hill and tornado winds, but overall a enjoyed it with a time of 1.47.40, a good start and a lot quicker than I had planned considering it was only 6 mins off my personal best.

Silverstone Half Marathon

12th March 2017 I went to Silverstone, not expecting much as so many people telling how awful it is, but I enjoyed it, was a flat course, with plenty of turns and support was good, I felt really comfortable all the way round and ended up with a new PB of 1.40.37 was so happy with this and went home a happy man.

Hastings Half Marathon

19th March 2017 This has always been a favourite of mine the support is amazing and the course is fun and challenging, I went out to just enjoy and see where the time gets me when I get to the sea front and 2 miles from the finish line.

I was absolutely flying, heading for a 1.37 PB, but hit the sea front and the worse winds in the race history, that hit my legs hard, but still got home with a course PB of 1.41.28.

Medway Runners Half Marathon

26th March 2017

I could not find one on this date, so decided to do the half marathon that the running group I am with do every year in December, now due to the junior park run being on, I had to run this course backwards which made this even more challenging and with trying new gels and the winds I settled for  a nice run out rather than any time near my PB.

Still under 2 hours with a time of 1.52.35

That was 4 down 1 to go and all under 2 hours and legs were feeling surprisingly good.

Paddockwood Half Marathon

Finally reached the 5th and final one, by this time my uncle was in the hospice but still following all my runs on Facebook, and passing on all his words of wisdom and support through his daughter and even set me a challenge to get near his best time, which was 1.35, Now I enjoy a challenge but even this could be too far for me right now had to find another 5 mins from somewhere, but I will give it ago.

This is one event I have always wanted to do, but never have always been told it is a PB course, I did not want to crash and burn out but wanted to give it my best shot.

The race started, I was flying hitting under 7 min miles for the first half of the race, but then my legs just tired and slowed up to 8 min miles, so  I just wanted to finish, runners were passing me, until I decided no more people were going to go pass me, so I kept with a runner all of the way to the finish and gave it all to get over the line.

I could not make the 5 mins needed but I knocked off 2 and a half mins from my PB and that much closer to my uncles best time.

A PB of 1.38.01 I was very happy I got a PB and managed to finish my challenge.

Unfortunately, my uncle has passed away, but he was still with us when I did this challenge, and feel him with me every time I run.
